Tomato Sauce Recipe
how to make homemade tomato sauce

This is an easy homemade tomato sauce recipe.

It's delicious and versatile. Everyone seems to enjoy this recipe.

It's also healthful.

Here's how:

The ingredients of the tomato sauce recipe

  • 1½ tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 or 2 cloves garlic—peeled and pressed (or finely chopped)
  • ¼ cup onion, peeled and finely chopped
  • 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (16 or 14 1/2 ounce) can diced tomatoes (or a can of plum tomatoes and chop them yourself)
  • 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
  • ½ teaspoon basil leaves
  • ½ teaspoon oregano leaves
  • ½ teaspoon thyme leaves
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • freshly ground black pepper according to taste

Use organic ingredients if possible.

The method for the tomato sauce recipe

You will need a large iron frying pan with cover.

(a) Heat oil in pan over medium low heat.

(b) Add onion and garlic. Sauté and stir occasionally until soft and almost brown (but not black).

(c) Stir in all the remaining ingredients. Simmer on very low heat, covered, for several hours until thick, stirring occasionally.

I [Dennis] seem to recall that I originally got this recipe from the Redbook cookbook decades ago. I've often gotten requests for it. If you can afford the carbs, it is an excellent sauce that you can use for many weight loss recipes. It's very flavorful, so you can use it in moderation.

The food counts are listed as follows.

Total calories / grams of proteins / grams of carbs / grams of fat (grams of saturated facts, if any).

Carbs listed are "net."

Approximate food counts per 1/2 cup: 90 / 3 / 21 / 4

(As with all recipes, if they are available organic ingredients are a healthy choice and the best choice for our planet.)

This completes the recipe for homemade tomato sauce.

Enjoy!
